Elroy Air, a developer of heavy-lift drones, has received a significant boost from the US Army with a $46 million multi-year contract. The funding aims to advance the company’s autonomous hybrid-electric VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) cargo drone, Chaparral, making it more capable of supporting troops in challenging environments where traditional supply routes may be compromised.

## Enhancing Military Logistics Capabilities

The contract focuses on improving Chaparral’s modular cargo delivery systems, enabling it to operate in contested and austere conditions. Key enhancements include:

| Feature | Description | |---|---| | Expeditionary Mobile Mission Planner | Tools for on-the-go mission planning | | Cyber-Protected Communication Links | Secure data transmission | | GPS-Denied Navigation | Reliable operation without GPS | | Onboard Autonomy | Increased self-sufficiency | | Field Reliability | Performance in harsh conditions |

Elroy Air CEO Dr. Andrew Clare emphasized the importance of autonomous heavy-lift drones in modern defense, stating that the contract reinforces their role in improving operational efficiency and reducing risks for troops.

## Designed for Contested Logistics

Chaparral is engineered for scenarios where conventional transportation is impractical. Its VTOL design allows it to take off and land without runways, delivering over 500 pounds of cargo directly to remote or damaged locations. The drone combines electric propulsion with a hybrid powertrain, extending its range to up to 450 miles without requiring charging infrastructure. Interchangeable mission pods enable quick payload changes, offering flexibility for varying mission needs.

Earlier this year, Elroy Air demonstrated Chaparral at T-REX, the US military’s flagship technology testing event. The company plans to begin domestic manufacturing later this year through a partnership with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions.

## Broader Applications Beyond Military Use

While the current contract is military-focused, Elroy Air envisions Chaparral playing a role in commercial logistics, disaster response, humanitarian aid, and wildfire support. The drone’s long-range autonomous capabilities could prove valuable in these sectors as well.
