GoPro MAX2 firmware adds 200Mbps bitrate

GoPro has released a significant free firmware update for its MAX2 360 camera. The update adds a high-bitrate recording mode and expands professional color tools, while a concurrent 40% discount brings the price down to $299.

The MAX2, launched less than a year ago, has won multiple awards. It earned "Best Overall 360 Camera" from WIRED and "Best 360 Camera for Pros" from Tom's Guide, according to the source report. The camera also contributed to GoPro winning a third Emmy Award for 360 technology.

Higher bitrate for cleaner footage

The headline addition is a new Maximum Bitrate option. It allows the MAX2 to record at up to 200 megabits per second.

Higher bitrates preserve more image data. This reduces compression artifacts. It also retains finer textures and details, which is crucial for fast-action scenes like skiing or mountain biking. The 200Mbps mode is available in the camera's premium recording options, including 8K 360 video and 4K single-lens mode.

Pro features for every time lapse

GoPro has expanded two key professional features to every time-lapse recording mode. These are 10-bit color and GP-Log color profile.

The affected modes now include TimeWarp, Night Effects, Time Lapse, and Night Lapse. Previously, these advanced color options were only available in select recording modes. GP-Log captures a flatter image that preserves more highlight and shadow detail. This gives editors far greater creative control during color grading.

Practical shooting improvements

The update also includes two practical quality-of-life features.

An Anti-Flickering toggle lets users quickly switch between 60Hz and 50Hz shutter settings. This solves flickering issues caused by different electrical frequencies in various countries, making it easier to capture clean indoor footage anywhere.

Secondly, Blur Reduction has been extended to single-lens video modes. This feature helps produce sharper footage in low-light situations, such as when shooting indoors or after sunset.

The MAX2's core features

The firmware builds upon the MAX2's existing capabilities. The camera captures immersive 8K 360-degree video, allowing users to reframe shots after filming. It also functions as a traditional action camera in single-lens mode.

GoPro's HyperSmooth stabilization keeps footage steady. The camera is waterproof, rugged, and features voice control and AI-powered reframing tools. It integrates with the GoPro Quik app. The source report states the current 40% discount dramatically lowers the cost of entry for premium 360 content creation.
