DJI has unveiled the Osmo 360 II action camera at the IFA event. The company claims the new model offers a significant specification boost over its predecessor, including a new square sensor, AI tools for low-light performance, and the addition of a D-Log color profile.

The source, DroneDJ, reports that the specifications are based on DJI's claims for a production model under controlled conditions. Pricing and availability details were not provided at the time of the announcement.

Capture Specifications

The core capture capabilities of the Osmo 360 II are centered on high-resolution 360-degree imaging. DJI states the camera can record 8K video at 60 frames per second. It uses a 1-inch square HDR sensor which, according to DJI, provides the same 360-degree image field as a standard 1-inch rectangular sensor. The company claims 14.5 stops of dynamic range, which it describes as double the brightness range. For low-light conditions, it features an AI SuperNight 2.0 mode. The sensor has 2.4 μm pixels and a new processing chip for sharp frames during fast motion.

Processing and Output Features

Beyond capture, the camera offers several processing modes for creative output. It can capture 120MP HDR 360-degree photos. For timelapse, it offers a 16K 360-degree mode using a 'Clouds' setting. A 64x Pano Slow Motion feature uses AI frame interpolation in post-production software, which DJI says is equivalent to a cropped 8K/480fps video; this is generated, not natively captured. An 8K/120fps 'Vortex' mode creates wraparound slow-motion footage. All formats support 10-bit color, alongside a D-Log M1 profile for color grading.

Hardware and Accessories

The physical design includes replaceable lenses with a hard coating. The camera weighs 183 grams and has 105GB of built-in storage. DJI claims a battery life of 100 minutes when recording 8K/30fps video, with an 80% charge achievable in 22 minutes. An optional Battery Extension Rod can extend runtime by 180 minutes. It is rated as waterproof to 10 meters without a case and 50 meters with a case, and can operate in temperatures as low as -20°C. Audio is handled by a four-microphone array compatible with OsmoAudio for the DJI Mic family. It uses a magnetic quick-release system with a standard 1/4-inch thread.

At launch, DJI plans to offer accessories tailored for scuba diving, motorcycling, skiing, mountain biking, and vlogging. The company states this offering is part of a strategy to engage a wider set of users across a broader range of activities, including professional users seeking more effective 360-degree footage.

Workflow Integration

Key workflow features aim to simplify post-production. A 'Spotlight Follow' function uses AI to keep a subject centered in the frame regardless of camera rotation, potentially eliminating the need to reframe in post-production. An NFC pad allows for quick connection to the DJI Mimo app for transferring footage or jumping into editing. DJI is also providing a DaVinci Resolve plugin for importing 360-degree files. However, the source notes a potential limitation: footage must still be exported from DJI Studio software before it can be ingested into Resolve, meaning a key processing step remains.

The source speculates that this workflow consideration is key for professional use, as the ability to reframe footage during the edit, rather than committing to a frame beforehand, depends on having sufficient image quality from the sensor to withstand cropping. With this launch, DJI is keeping competitive pressure on the action camera market while its claims await independent testing.
