Amazon Expands US Drone Delivery to 500 Communities

Amazon is taking a significant step forward in its drone delivery ambitions, unveiling plans to expand its Prime Air service to nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States. This move marks a major milestone in the company's push to make drone deliveries a routine part of everyday shopping.

Expansion Plans

The expansion is expected to bring ultrafast drone delivery to communities serving tens of millions of customers, providing shoppers with another option alongside Amazon's same-day and next-day delivery services. According to Amazon, its drone delivery locations currently record the highest average delivery volumes in the US, with thousands of packages delivered by drone each day. Not every product can be delivered by drone, but the eligible selection is already surprisingly broad. Nearly all items weighing five pounds or less that fit inside a large shoebox qualify for delivery, covering more than 60% of Amazon's most frequently purchased products. Delivery Fees and Safety

For Prime members, drone delivery is free on eligible orders of $50 or more. Orders below that threshold carry a $2.99 delivery fee, while non-Prime customers pay $4.99. One of the biggest hurdles for any drone delivery service is safety, and Amazon says that's where its technology stands out. Prime Air drones are equipped with an advanced Detect-and-Avoid system that continuously scans the surrounding airspace, allowing the aircraft to independently identify obstacles and make real-time flight decisions without human intervention.

The drones also use onboard cameras and sensors to navigate safely and verify that no people, pets, or vehicles are beneath them before lowering a package. Amazon says the camera data is processed entirely onboard and isn't used to monitor or track individuals. The service operates under the Federal Aviation Administration's Part 135 certification, and Amazon's fully electric drones are built to fly in light rain and varying temperatures, while producing less noise than many people might expect.
