Amazon Prime Air Expands Drone Delivery to Nearly 500 US Cities and Towns
Amazon plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to nearly 500 cities and towns in the US by the end of 2026, increasing its footprint sixfold.

Amazon is set to significantly expand its Prime Air drone delivery service across the United States, with plans to reach nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026. This expansion would increase Prime Air's footprint about sixfold, with the company currently operating drone delivery from 11 sites across 10 US metro areas.
## Current Operations Prime Air currently operates in metro areas that include Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Waco. Each Prime Air site serves an area of about 175 square miles. The company has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages to customers by drone this year.
## Expansion Plans The company plans to launch service soon in the Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise metro areas, with more communities to follow later this year. According to David Carbon, vice president of Amazon Prime Air, Prime Air provides customers with an even speedier option for delivery, with packages arriving in as fast as 30 minutes.
## Eligible Products and Delivery Most Prime Air locations now offer millions of products for drone delivery, including groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications, and household goods. Nearly all products weighing five pounds or less and fitting inside a large shoebox can qualify for drone delivery. The delivery process involves the drone checking for people, pets, and vehicles before releasing the package. Prime members receive free drone delivery for orders of $50 or more, while non-Prime members are charged $4.99.
## Drone Specifications The expansion uses Amazon's MK30 delivery drone, which has a maximum takeoff weight of 83.2 pounds and an operating range of 7.5 miles. The drone uses onboard cameras and sensors for navigation and obstacle detection, and its Detect-and-Avoid system monitors the surrounding airspace and allows the aircraft to respond to obstacles during flight. The following table summarizes the key specifications of the MK30 drone: | Specification | Value | | --- | --- | | Maximum takeoff weight | 83.2 pounds | | Operating range | 7.5 miles | | Operating area | 174 square miles | | Package weight limit | 5 pounds | | Package size limit | large shoebox
