Gear: GeoCue and Ouster partner to integrate a U.S.-made digital lidar sensor into drone survey payloads

GeoCue and Ouster announced a strategic partnership on September 1, 2026. The collaboration integrates Ouster's Rev8 OS1 Max digital lidar sensor into GeoCue's TrueView drone payload product line.

According to the companies, the newly integrated sensor complies with the Build America, Buy America Act (BABA). This compliance is important for securing federal infrastructure and utility projects in the United States that mandate domestic content. Joint flight testing and firmware tuning for the integration were conducted in Huntsville, Alabama.

GeoCue CEO Frank Darmayan stated the partnership's goal. "We are moving America's drone surveying onto American sensing by pairing our TrueView payloads with Ouster's Rev8 OS1 Max," he said. Darmayan added that this provides customers a compliant, high-performance solution for critical infrastructure monitoring and large-scale mapping.

Sensor Advantages for Aerial Surveying

The Rev8 OS1 Max sensor offers several technical benefits for drone-based surveying. It features a smaller spot size and tighter beam, which improves the detection of thin objects like power lines. The sensor has a 200-meter range at 10% reflectivity, allowing drones to fly at higher altitudes over utility corridors without losing data quality.

A key feature is its ability to capture native color data alongside 3D lidar information. This means every measured point is automatically aligned with its corresponding color. This provides an additional RGB data layer for GeoCue's LP360 point-cloud software, supplementing the data from the dual cameras already built into every TrueView payload.

The sensor also operates with 256 channels in both 2K and 4K resolution modes. This high channel count maintains dense point clouds even during fast flight operations. It enables efficient long-corridor surveys conducted by both multi-rotor and fixed-wing drone platforms.

Ouster CEO Angus Pacala commented on the partnership's broader implications. "Our partnership with GeoCue is a sign of how native color digital lidar can serve as the bedrock for physical AI applications that have a profound impact on infrastructure and public safety," Pacala said.

Market Focus and Live Demonstration

The partnership specifically targets utility and infrastructure mapping customers. The integrated system combines the TrueView 1 payloads, the Ouster lidar sensor, and the LP360 software to deliver survey-grade data. This move follows prior expansions of GeoCue's TrueView line, including a lidar system co-developed with CHC Navigation.

Ouster will demonstrate the Rev8 OS1 Max sensor integrated with GeoCue's technology at Booth 1653 during the Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas. The trade show is scheduled for September 1-3, 2026.
