AVI-SPL has partnered with drone logistics firm Matternet to deploy autonomous drone delivery for its field technicians. Announced on September 15, 2026, the collaboration aims to deliver critical equipment and replacement parts within minutes in congested urban markets, directly addressing ground-transportation delays.

The partnership combines AVI-SPL's service network and supply chain with Matternet's type-certified drone platform. The model is designed to move parts to technicians faster, potentially transforming service response times. John Murphy, AVI-SPL's chief operating officer, stated the move was about reimagining equipment logistics within their service ecosystem.

"Autonomous drone delivery can improve responsiveness, reduce transportation delays, and create entirely new service capabilities for our customers," Murphy said.

Planned Operational Use Cases

Three primary use cases have been outlined for the drone delivery system. The first is rapid parts delivery to technicians working in dense downtown areas. The second involves creating premium service tiers with faster response times for high-priority customers. The third extends the drone logistics model across AVI-SPL's broader supply chain to reduce road transport in metro regions.

Andreas Raptopoulos, founder and CEO of Matternet, argued that such drone delivery would redefine time-sensitive business logistics. He emphasized the shift from hours to minutes for part retrieval.

The Matternet Platform and Certification

Matternet's involvement is gated by its Federal Aviation Administration certifications, a key enabler for these operations. The company provides the Matternet M2 drone, the Matternet Station, and its software platform. It holds both standard type certification and production certification from the FAA.

The company has a track record in urban operations. It was the first authorized for commercial beyond-visual-line-of-sight delivery over cities in Switzerland and the first to launch routine, revenue-generating drone delivery in the United States. Matternet partners with UPS and Ameriflight for Part 135 flight operations.

Its commercial history began with humanitarian missions in 2014, followed by business-to-business healthcare logistics in Europe in 2017 and the U.S. In 2019. The company expanded into business-to-consumer delivery in Silicon Valley in 2024. To date, Matternet's technology has facilitated over 60,000 commercial flights in urban and suburban environments in the U.S. And Europe.

The partnership signals a growing application of certified drone platforms for business logistics, moving beyond retail to support field service industries where time is critical.
