General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has announced a new uncrewed aircraft system called Wildfire. The company describes it as a clean-sheet design intended to maximize future investments in large drones.

Wildfire draws on GA-ASI's three decades of experience building over 1,600 uncrewed aircraft, including models like the MQ-9 Reaper. The company's aircraft have accumulated nearly 10 million flight hours, primarily in combat roles.

A New Type of Uncrewed Aircraft

According to GA-ASI President David R. Alexander, Wildfire represents a tailored and attrition-tolerant design. "This is exactly the right design for high-demand missions and cost-conscious customers," Alexander said. He stated the aircraft balances high capability with flexibility and scalability, claiming there has never been anything like it before.

The system merges proven UAS features with lower-cost components and reimagined modularity. For military users, this approach allows Wildfire to be fielded quickly in large numbers. It is designed to take on risk in kinetic battlefield roles and provide mass in ways that would be prohibitive with other systems. For non-combat applications, its increased payload capacity and stronger hardpoints offer new options for heavy cargo delivery and other commercial activities.

Focused Mission Set and Proposed Roles

Alexander clarified that while the MQ-9B platform can perform a wide variety of missions, Wildfire has a different focus. "Wildfire is different. It's focused on core ISR, strike and similar roles," he explained. He characterized it as a high-volume, lower-cost airplane that excels at a specific set of tasks.

The aircraft is proposed for the U.S. Air Force's Massed Modular Aircraft competition run by the Defense Innovation Unit. This program seeks an alternative to the MQ-9A Reaper. GA-ASI claims Wildfire meets or surpasses all DIU requirements, exceeding an 8,000 nautical mile ferry range. It is capable of carrying two Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles simultaneously for meaningful combat distance.

Technical Capabilities and Production Timeline

Wildfire can carry various payload combinations. It is designed for high autonomy and collaborative operations from its first day of service, use technology from GA-ASI's FQ-42A systems. Advanced autonomy allows for the networked control of dozens of Wildfires at once. The aircraft's proliferated low-earth orbit satellite controls have already been proven on other company aircraft currently flying.

GA-ASI states Wildfire can be delivered years earlier than the DIU's Fiscal Year 2031 timeline. The company claims it can produce more than twice as many aircraft in the same amount of time compared to other systems. This accelerated schedule is attributed to GA-ASI's existing manufacturing footprint and extensive supplier network.

The aircraft's payload capacity supports numerous mission configurations. It can carry four Joint Strike Missiles at once, or various mixes of munitions, launched effects, sensors, and other payloads.
