Drone Solutions International has received regulatory approval to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone deliveries in Zimbabwe. The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) granted the approval for operations using Kite Aero's KITE uncrewed aircraft system.

The six-month approval process involved collaboration with CAAZ and Air Traffic Services. It covered aircraft specifications, operating manuals, and operational risk assessments. A live demonstration flight program was conducted in August 2026.

The Role of Operational Data

A key component of the safety case was historical flight data. Kite Aero supported the application with information from its AXIOM drone operations management system. The company states AXIOM has recorded over 41,000 autonomous flights and 20,000 flight hours for KITE drones across four continents.

This data provided regulators with a substantial real-world performance record, moving beyond theoretical projections.

Managing Operations with AXIOM

The AXIOM platform will be central to commercial flights. Drone Solutions pilots will use it to plan, authorize, and operate every KITE mission. Procedures accepted by CAAZ for risk assessment, flight planning, and airspace coordination are embedded within the system.

AXIOM also tracks fleet-wide data like aircraft hours and battery cycles. This creates a centralized information source for both the operator and the regulator.

Initial Medical Logistics Focus

The first application in Zimbabwe will be medical and pathology logistics. The plan is to connect regional health facilities with central laboratories using drones. This aims to move samples and critical supplies by air, supplementing road transport.

For a country where distance and infrastructure challenge medical logistics, BVLOS drones offer a practical solution.

Drone Solutions CEO Jeremiah Musabayana commented on the rigorous process. "CAAZ set a high bar, and rightly so," he said. He noted close cooperation with regulators and credited the KITE operational data for providing evidence-based answers.

Regulatory and Expansion Context

With this decision, Zimbabwe becomes the latest jurisdiction to approve the KITE system for BVLOS operations. Kite Aero reports the system is now approved in 25 jurisdictions globally, including under EASA and FAA frameworks.

The companies have outlined expansion plans beyond Zimbabwe. Their strategy targets operations in Mozambique, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
