DJI has released a firmware update for its Avata 360 drone. The version 1.00.0800 software adds zoom for FocusTrack, waypoint flight, and support for the DJI RC Pro 2 controller, giving pilots more automated tools for cinematic 360-degree video production. The Avata 360 combines an immersive FPV-style flying experience with the ability to capture an entire 360-degree scene in 8K/60fps HDR video.

The update introduces zoom for FocusTrack and waypoint flight with point-of-interest support. The zoom enhancement for FocusTrack, DJI's subject-tracking feature, provides creators with greater compositional control while following a moving subject. Waypoint flight allows pilots to plan precise flight routes by placing points on a map. These routes can be associated with a Point of Interest, automating complex camera movements. This feature is described as arguably the most useful in the release.

Controller and app ecosystem upgrades

Support for the DJI RC Pro 2 and updates to the DJI Fly app and DJI Studio are included. The firmware update adds compatibility with the DJI RC Pro 2 controller, which itself requires firmware version 01.00.0900. This expands the lineup of standard remote options for the Avata 360, which also includes the RC-N2 and RC-N3. The drone supports several control arrangements, including goggles, motion controllers, and these standard remotes with specific pairing requirements. The Goggles 3 and Goggles N3, for instance, work with the RC Motion 3 or FPV Remote Controller 3.

Flight performance and test results

A test flight demonstrated waypoint navigation, automatic return, and battery status after 1 minute 50 seconds. The mission used five waypoints with a point of interest set in the middle. The system calculated a total mission duration of one minute and fifty seconds. After reaching the fifth waypoint, the drone automatically initiated a return-to-home sequence, though this was canceled by the pilot. The test concluded with the drone's battery at 48%.

Additional features and known issues

Automatic display switching in Vision Assist and potential reset of Return-to-Home settings are noted, alongside unspecified bug fixes. The Vision Assist feature now automatically switches the display orientation to match the aircraft's direction of travel. Pilots should be aware that the drone's Return-to-Home altitude and maximum flight distance settings may reset to default after applying the update. The release also includes general bug fixes. The 360-degree video capability allows creators to choose their preferred viewing angle and reframe footage during editing. The test flight automatically returned home after reaching waypoint five, with the battery at 48%.
