UAS Sentry has launched a new portable drone detection system. The Nexus Observer was unveiled at the Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas, according to a company announcement.

The device is designed to provide security teams and first responders with the real-time location of a drone and its pilot. It operates without requiring a separate smartphone or tablet application.

Dual-Band Detection Architecture

At its core, the system uses a dual-receiver design. It incorporates two antennas and two independent radio receivers, each with a dedicated processor. UAS Sentry CEO David Burritt explained the rationale. "Instead of relying on a single receiver to scan multiple bands, the Observer uses two dedicated receiver and processor paths running unique scanning algorithms," he said. This architecture allows the unit to detect FAA Remote ID signals on both the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands.

Built-In Display and Cloud Features

The Nexus Observer includes a built-in color touchscreen that displays detection data, eliminating the need for an external app for basic operation. For additional display options, a free iOS app is available, while most Android devices can connect directly via the Chrome browser without installing an app.

Detection data can be sent to the UAS Sentry Cloud via Wi-Fi or relayed through a mobile device. Every unit comes with two years of full access to the cloud platform. This service includes a suite of features for managing drone detections.

Hardware and Pricing

Built for field use, the device has an all-metal case and an internal battery rated for over 12 hours of continuous operation. It also features embedded GPS, an audible alarm, and a color-changing LED. Each unit ships with a water-resistant protective hard case.

The current price for the Nexus Observer is $1,595. UAS Sentry states that customers comparing products with similar dual-band, dual-processor capabilities should expect to spend at least five times that amount.

Upgrade Paths for Existing Customers

The launch includes benefits for current UAS Sentry users. Owners of the UAS Sentry V4 system will receive a free over-the-air firmware update that adds the Nexus Observer's functionality, as both products share the same underlying hardware platform.

Additionally, an upgrade program is available for owners of earlier UAS Sentry portable receivers. Customers with an active maintenance agreement may trade in their old unit for a credit worth 80% of its original purchase price toward a new Nexus Observer. Complete program details are available through UAS Sentry resellers.

Firmware development and final assembly for the Nexus Observer are performed in the United States.
